Addiction treatment information to consider

The word drug rehabilitation is an umbrella term for the processes of medical and/or psychotherapeutic treatment, for dependency on psychoactive substances. The general intent is to enable the patient to stop substance abuse, in order to avoid the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that can be caused, especially by extreme abuse. Finding an effective drug rehab can be a difficult and confusing task. Here are some points to consider when looking for drug rehabs.

Drug rehabilitation tends to focus on the two fold nature of chemical dependency: psychological and physical dependency. Most drug rehabilitation facilities will have a drug detox program to treat withdraw symptoms that occur from regular drug use. This process can be dangerous depending on the drugs of choice, and drug rehabs must have a medical staff on board to medically manage this process. Withdraw symptoms occur because of the brains attempt to re-balance, this can last weeks or months depending on the person and drugs used.

The psychological dependence must be addressed in any drug rehabilitation program. The patient will learn new ways to interact in a drug free environment. One of the most important changes is to not associate with old drug using friends. 12 step programs can be extremely helpful in this process by examining and changing habits related to there addiction. Most drug rehab’s will have some introduction to this 12 step process and encourage involvement.

Some addiction recovery services use pharmacotherapy’s in addition to psychotherapy to combat addiction. Such medications as methadone and most recent Bupernorphine (Suboxone) are widely used to treat opiate dependence; these medications are used in either maintenance therapy or for short term drug detox. Other antidepressant medications are used to moderate drug use, and there are several anti craving medications as well. All can be helpful tools in a drug rehab facility.

There are many approaches to drug treatment and rehabilitation. There is the disease model of addiction where it is contended that there are maladaptive patterns of alcohol and substance use displayed by addicted individuals and is the result of a lifelong disease that is biological in nature and exacerbated by environmental factors. There is the client centered approach to therapeutic change, created by Carl Rogers. This approach centers on the fact that there are three necessary and sufficient conditions for personal change: unconditional positive regard, accurate empathy, and genuineness.

There is the psychoanalytic approach created by Sigmund Freud, which contends that the main cause of the addiction syndrome is the unconscious need to entertain and to enact various kinds of homosexual and perverse fantasies and at the same time to avoid taking responsibility for this. Then there are the cognitive models of drug rehabilitation.

These include relapse prevention and Cognitive therapy of substance abuse. These approaches focus mainly at examining the core beliefs and the thinking of the addicted person. Its aim is to make the client aware of discrepancies that may exist and disputing them. Also taking a look at high risk situations and relapse triggers that may contribute to drug use.
